The Monthly Stack: Top Five New Book Releases For October
The 5 books I'm most looking forward to adding to my tbr!
After an unexpected reading lull in September, I am ready to jump into cozy reading season. There are a number of really amazing novels being released this month but if you happen to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of books you want to read, I narrowed it down to my top 5.
October is a great month for magic, spooky, gothic vibes and many of the books on this list have those. There’s also a historical fiction novel written by one of the greats in the genre, on a figure I have long been fascinated with.
Happy reading!
Alchemy of Secrets
I just finished this book (got it early through Book of the Month) and if you’re looking for a magical, atmospheric but haunting read- this is for you. Holland St. James dangerous quest starts with attending the mysterious Professor’s class on folklore, learning about the myths of Los Angeles. Now a graduate student writing her thesis on Hollywood deaths being linked to deals with the devil, Holland finds herself racing against her time of death and entering the world of magic where she doesn’t know who to trust.
Alchemy of Secrets by Stephanie Garber, releases October 7.
The Scammer
Jackson does “ripped from the headlines” for young adults really well. In her latest, college student Jordyn agrees to let her roommate’s brother stay in their dorm after being released from jail. Charming, he begins to get involved in the college girls’ lives, slowly gaining their trust and making Jordyn uneasy. When one of her roommates goes missing it’s up to Jordyn to find out what happened to her.
The Scammer by Tiffany D. Jackson, releases October 7.
Bog Queen
Forensic anthropologist Agnes is sent to northwest England to investigate the Iron Age body of a woman who was found preserved in a bog. This leads her on a journey to the past to find out what happened to this woman, while also coming into conflict with those who want to profit from the bog and those wanting to leave it completely undisturbed. Agnes faces not only the questions of this bog woman but also her own role in the world, in this book that takes place post-Brexit.
Bog Queen by Anna North, releases Oct.14.
Boleyn Traitor
A sequel of sorts to The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance, Gregory’s latest focuses on Jane Boleyn. Her life is intricately tied to Henry VIII, as wife to George Boleyn, sister-in-law to Anne, and cousin-in-law and lady in waiting to Catherine Howard. Ruthless and ambitious, her determination to survive in Henry’s court makes her a fascinating character of history and I have always been intrigued by her. Cannot wait to read!
Boleyn Traitor by Phillippa Gregory, releases Oct.14.
The Library of Lost Girls
Gwen has always admired her older sister, Izzy, but is alarmed when she returns from finishing school as a different person: perfect, complacent, and eager to get married. Gwen suspects something strange is going on at the Delphi School for Girls; after cheating her way in, she realizes there is something far more sinister going on in this gothic young adult novel.
The Library of Lost Girls by Kristen Pipps, releases Oct.28.
