Field Notes: June
A monthly collection of things worth noticing.
Field Notes is a place to gather the things that have caught my attention, brought me joy, or simply made this season feel like itself. In this June edition, I’m sharing a handful of bookmarked discoveries, a few notes from life lately, and what’s on the horizon as summer unfolds.
Bookmarked
Carley Fortune is having a moment this summer, and I’m fully on board. Her novels are a favorite of mine as she adds some unexpected depth in her summer romances. I’m planning to start One Golden Summer tonight (the last one I have left to read) and have Every Year After queued up to watch.
I’ve already read her latest, Our Perfect Storm, and have it ranked towards the top of her novels.
Worth Sharing
An interesting book trend: our childhood book characters being reexamined as grown ups. Blair Waldorf as a 40 year old would be a nice, juicy read. Nancy Drew as a divorcee? That one I’m not so sure about.
The American Girl nostalgia I can also get behind, though there is something to be said about leaving these well loved characters as they were.
Seasonal Notes
Speaking of nostalgia, it has hit with my meal planning as well; my mom used to make tomato sandwiches, on white bread. I’m an only child so summer days were often her and me, going to the library and eating together before I went off to the pool or with friends. While looking for ideas for my own meals this week I came across this pimento cheese and tomato sandwich recipe to make a more elevated version of our 1990’s sandwich.
A Small Joy
To mark the end of a hard school year our library trio decided to see the musical Suffs and I brought my nearly 13 year old daughter along for the evening. It filled my cup, combining a childhood love of musicals with my nerdy history love of the women’s suffrage movement. Time with my girl is precious as she grows more independent and though she was exhausted from a day at school, she loved it as well.
It was a joyful celebration of the end of the school year and a lovely way to kick off the summer.
On the Horizon
Something I never thought I’d say: I am genuinely excited for The Odyssey to be released in theaters. As a high schooler I struggled through it; as an adult I attempted a reread that quickly got abandoned. I do not generally enjoy journey stories and obviously The Odyssey is the ultimate one. But the combination of Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon has convinced me that this will be a version I’ll enjoy!
